Wedding Video - From a Videographer's Perspective
Updated: May 1
A wedding video helps you have a mini story of your wedding with the added benefit of captivating sound and seeing movement, and is as important as wedding photographs.
Some couples these days consider videography an extravagance. Much as it may seem so, having the most important day of your life captured in movie format sure makes our hearts flutter, and after reading what our expert on the matter has to say about it, and watching his teaser videos at the end of this article, we are sure that you will be smitten by the idea too.
Over to Jino Agnelli, wedding and event videographer on the French Riviera.
HOW DID IT ALL START FOR YOU AS A VIDEOGRAPHER
I first discovered video when I was learning about it during my Multimedia 'Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie' (DUT). I immediately loved it, so I then continued with a pro video license, after which I started to work for France 3 and TF1 TV but I quickly realised that it was not as creative and personal as I wanted and it didn't allow as much freedom as I would have liked.
It was in 2013 that I began with wedding videography, and I could never do without it since!
The highlight of my job is being able to share one of the best days of my clients, discovering new places, all the entertainment and bringing out the beauty of the day along with the emotions, immortalising it into a video that is such a beautiful memory.
Today, it’s a passion of everyday life that goes with me everywhere. And it was at a wedding that I met my current girlfriend, who is a photographer!
WHAT ARE THE MUST WEDDING SCENES FOR VIDEO
Preparations for the atmosphere with loved ones, the communication and discovery.
The meeting of the bride and groom, a wonderful scene to capture passion and tenderness.
The ceremony for the exchange of rings, the tears and emotions.
The venue and the decoration for the bewilderment and poetic feel.
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY
I strive to meet all the expectations of the bridal couple and to transcribe as well as possible the entire atmosphere along with the emotions with the most discretion as possible.
With the couple I am close and intimate with them during the preparations of the morning as well as during the couples session, but for the most part I then try to hide as much as possible.
HOW LONG IS THE WEDDING VIDEO
The "Best Of" lasts around 3 minutes. This is the main video that brings together all the highlights of your day, and is easy to share with all your guests.
Then there is a more complete film of about 20 minutes which covers the wedding day in a more complete way to include the important moments of the ceremony and the speeches.
VIDEO MUSIC - WHOSE CHOICE
Before editing the video, I propose my suggestions to the bridal couple. Music is very important because it involves the rhythm, the style and the final rendering of the video!
HOW DOES PRICING WORK
I only offer one package that includes the full day of the wedding, which excludes overtime and travel expenses. An initial meeting allows me to meet the newlyweds and to give them advice on what the best conditions for the wedding would be.
WHAT TO ASK YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER BEFORE
As for wedding photos, if you are interested in what a full film is, don't hesitate to ask to see one to see the results.
Each videographer has their own style and their rendering must really be compatible with expectations.
There are just a few differences depending on the offers: time on site, duration of videos, drone, delay of processing and delivery to the couple...
HOW MANY MAKE UP THE VIDEO TEAM
I’m usually alone, but ideally it would be to be two so as to have the most complete and creative edits possible. There are lots of things to do and materials for the videos.
The second cameraman can focus on the decoration, the emotions of the guests and the drone mainly.
WHAT ARE THE STYLES POSSIBLE
There are mainly two styles: moody and fine-art.
Moody is darker and more cinematic and often associated with a more rock bridal style (tattooed, bearded, pierced…).
Fine-art is much brighter and timeless. This is the style that I have always chosen and which suits me best, the very bright images make me dream!
WHO HAS THE FINAL SAY IN THE VIDEO EDIT
I always send a pre-release to validate the videos with the bridal couple. I put all my heart into making the best videos possible, but if the newlyweds have some editing, I adapt, there is absolutely not an issue with that. Once validated I send the final links of the videos.
IS A GOOD VIDEOGRAPHER/PHOTOGRAPHER TEAM IMPORTANT
Yes, as we will spend the whole day together and have to capture all the important moments while being as discreet as possible. As a videographer I am always accompanied by a photographer and I am therefore used to working in pairs or as a team.
DOES THE VIDEOGRAPHER NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH THE VENUE
Not necessarily. If the timing of the day is tight then, yes. On the contrary, it is always very exciting to discover a new place and go through it to capture beautiful content!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE
Canon 5DMKIV and Canon ESO R with Canon L series optics, a Ronin SC stabilizer, a Konova rail and a Mavic Pro 2 Drone.
DO YOU HAVE BACKUP EQUIPMENT
Yes I use my two cameras for weddings, with professional memory cards and the rushes (raw footage) are then stored in duplicate. And online videos are accessible "for life" on a professional platform and easily downloadable.
