Digital Water Art - Original Wedding Keepsake

Updated: Apr 28

Your wedding day memories carry on after the actual day. There are the more traditional options or as we saw, abstract art variations, or one step towards painting, portrait art as a beautiful keepsake for years to come.

We caught up with the talented Nicolise Harding, a wedding and events photographer as well as designer in South Africa. Nicolise travels for events and caters for an international clientele and has set up a unique way to transform photos into pieces of art - cue Digital Water Art!

HOW DID YOU BEGIN WITH DIGITAL WATER PAINT

The water paint photos came to light from a portrait project, run by Miss Lucky Pony, I entered at the beginning of lock down.

The idea was to be connected with a stranger from anywhere in the world, and do a unique portrait art piece of them. So I got partnered up with a girl based in London and that became a challenge in itself… How will I get this art piece to her while in lockdown? I started to Pinterest a few thoughts and then it hit me. Digital Water Paint. I was going to paint it anyways so might as well learn something new! I watched a few Youtube videos, downloaded water paint brush sets and got started. It is a blessing to understand the tricks of water paint when you do it digitally.

You need to know where the water “will flow” and what would be the best to add focus on the image. And what I love about doing it digitally, is I can do a piece and if I do not like it, erase it and start new… Without wasting paper or paint!

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS

Even though this kind of artwork is digital, it’s still an emotional process. I study the way the light falls, what makes this image to unique to the client and where in the house will it be displayed.

Getting started with an art piece such as this, the client can provide me with three images of their choosing. Together, we can discuss which one will be the best for this technique and I will paint the chosen one.

I then import it to Photoshop and do my magic. This process usually takes about 2-3 working days, depending on the amount of detail (landscape, wildlife or people as a subject). After that, I email the finalised image as a jpeg back to the client and they can print it or use it digitally to their heart’s content!

THINGS TO KNOW FOR THE END RESULT TO BE PERFECT

Tips when providing a photograph:

  • HiRes Photographs - 5MB and higher: High resolution is the best as it makes it easier for me to capture the finer details and to be able to print it at a large format.

  • Must be done via email/Dropbox/WeTransfer; other applications compress the photo and lowers the resolution horrifically for this kind of artwork.

  • Any device that has a high resolution capacity for photos are acceptable. Some smartphones have the option to set the camera quality to HiRes & HD, that is preferred.

  • The subject, whether it’s an animal, person/s or landscape, must be in focus.

  • 5MB allows you to print as large as an A4 size, and 16MB allows for A0 size.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE AND WHY IN THE PHOTOGRAPHY WORLD

Wedding photographers I admire are Natasha Bouma, Anastatia Polyakova (Afterglow Photography) & Ett Venter. All three have such a different styles and it’s mesmerizing to go through their work. I’m lucky enough to shoot with Anastasia on her weddings.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Clients are welcome to choose more than one image, the price and time will be adjusted accordingly. And if I was the photographer of their wedding or event, they will receive such a painting as part of their package.

I also offer printing services for those who prefer me to handle that as well.
